My boyfriend just admitted himself into a psychiatric hospital to get help, how long will he be in there for, am i going to be able to visit, and will he be able to call me?

I can answer your question because I did intake work at a psychiatric hospital for years.

First of all, your friend can have visitors and can make and receive phone calls while he is hospitalized and so you should plan on visiting him. Call the hospital to find out what their visiting hours are.
Secondly, if he is a voluntary patient, he was not committed or being held for examination for a set amount of time. And so his doctor can release him at any time. Or he can make a request to be discharged. But the length of time he will be hospitalized has to do with what is wrong with him and how well he is able to recover…just as in a general hospital.
And so what your friend needs is your support. Be sure to tell him that you want him to recover and be well and that you are pulling for him.

Your friend was given a written list of his rights on admission and if he chooses to, he can tell you how long his doctor needs to keep him in the hospital and if they will be testing him. All this takes time but hospitalization is very short these days and the treatment is intensive.

I wish you and him all the best.

1. The rich are the only ones who can afford a steady supply of illicit drugs anyway (or at least it was like that before meth)
2. It’s an intense process. It takes 3 or 4 trained professionals to handle and care for 1 drug addict. rehab centers need extensive security systems to stop addicts from escaping.

Not at the time of admission, but at time of assessment for admission. For a compulsory admission, you would have to be conscious when assessed under the Mental Health Act. For a voluntary admission, you would need to be conscious in order to give your consent to admission. Of course, you can also be sedated without being unconcsious.

I have bipolar disorder and am 100% positive that a hospital environment is what I need right now. Are there such hospitals that I can check myself into and then live there? Any information would be really helpful.

You need to get in touch with the Psychiatric Association which services the area in which you live in. They will be the ones who would be able to refer you to a residential setting.

Do not be surprised by the inability of that agency to not have that type of information. There are a great many people in the same situation as you are who are currently in that type of setting. It might be of their choice that they are there and it could possibly be the conclusion that their family members due to their inability to function in the outside world.

You must be patient. It might take a long time in order to find out just what facility is available in the area in which you live.

I OD’d on pills about 10 days ago, and spent 7 days in a psychiatric hospital. They discharged me even though I told them I wasn’t ready, and now I feel just as bad as I did the night I tried to kill myself.

What should I do?

Phone the ward staff where you were an inpatient and ask for advice they may tell you to come back in or give you a cpn in the community to support you. The psych should have arranged to see you within 7 days of leaving the hospital anyway so if you see them in the next day or 2 tell them.

If you have any pills get rid of them immediately before you take them. Ask a friend or relative to stay with you for support and safety. Call The Samaritans for help in the UK on local rates calls of 08457 90 90 90 (out UK on 44 8457 90 90 90 no idea of cost). They now have a free call line on 116 123 in the UK as well or give them your mobile number so they can call you back if you have little credit. Local branches see people in person or you can email (Jo@samaritans.org) or text them for support.

Good luck

Serious question. Don’t give me stupid answer. I’m well aware it’s not normal. But I get random urges to stab myself and earlier I was cooking dinner and had a fork in my hand and had the strongest urge to stab myself in the leg with it, that I ended up throwing the fork so I wouldn’t. If I ever actually did stab myself on impulse, would they hold me in a psychiatric hospital for it?
Um. If it helps from more people talking about 17 year olds, I’m almost 20.

I’m going to quote you the law so that you can understand.

In all states, if someone becomes harmful to themselves or others or is unable to care for themselves due to a mental illness or has impaired judgment due to a mental illness, then, yes.

Although mental health code laws differ from state to state, this is the general rule of thumb. What would happen is you would be taken to an emergency room for treatment for your self inflicted wound and you would be given a psychiatric evaluation right there. If you were found to be suicidal, homicidal or unable to care for yourself and protect yourself from harm due to a mental illness, then they would offer you psychiatric hospitalization on a voluntary basis and if you refused, the legal process would begin.
The doctor in the E.R. will have to certify you. The mental health examiner could petition you into a hospital against your will for a predetermined amount of time. After that time you would have to face a court hearing and talk to the judge about why you did this and the judge would listen to the doctor and the mental health examiner and make a determination as to if you should remain in the hospital until the doctor feels it is safe enough to discharge you or the judge releases you and sends you home for lack of evidence.

You will be given a list of your rights in writing and everything will be explained to you but the bottom line is that you may be taken to the hospital to save you from self harm and treat your condition.

My most concern is if they would be taken to a psychiatric hospital??. Thank you..

If the person was in the middle of a panic attack, the emergency room would assess them for any other medical issue and help them breathe and calm down. There would likely be a psychological assessment to see if there are other issues and if the person is okay to return home. The doctor would also be likely to have the person make an appointment with their own doctor or a psychiatrist to talk about medication and other treatment for panic disorder. Psychiatric hospitalization is available for those who need it, either by request or because they are a danger to themselves or someone else.

Well, there are mental health associates who work on the floor with patients, but they’re not really doctors.

Mostly it’s psychiatrists, residents, and licensed social workers, but they only see each patient once a day (if that).

If you want to work directly with patients for most of the day, talking to them or whatever, then it’s best to be a mental health associate.
