Feedback from those who deal with diabetes and the Veterans Hospital would be greatly appreciated!?

April 172010

My father is 58 years old. He goes to the Veterans Hospital in California (Palo Alto) I have recently accompanied him to a doctors visit, and I was not thrilled with his doctor. I got the feeling that she was preoccupied with others, and did not take my father’s concerns seriously. (he is diabetic and has kidney disease and suffers from chronic back pain) I understand and I am well aware that they are over worked doctors, but the fact remains they are doctors. And they have my father’s health in their hands. My Father currently takes Aspart and NPH… do you recommedt that or are there better insulins? My dad also wants the Insulin pen for the convenience of it all. But his doctor would not let him get it, nor would she let him buy it for himself. I am absolutely frustrated and I have no clue what to do. I want to complain but it seems all the same there. And any other health plan for him would be absolutely outrageous. Anyone have suggestions or their own stories about dealing with the VA… anything is appreciated. I don’t mean to sound like a whiny brat but I’m a 25 year old woman who loves her father. Thank you.

Hi Beka,

Your grievance is not unusual and it is real. I feel sorry for you and your dad. I am a RN of many years and see this happening many times.

I know that the outcome of complaints too will favour the employee but you owe it to yourself and your dad to do something about it. Some doctors have their favourite treatment regimes from which they will not change however you must try.

I look after a diabetic patient. I use the pen loaded insulin. It is easier and theoretically more convenient when used correctly. It is less accurate with smaller doses.

Please do not phrase you letter in an angry manner. It will be dismissed even before it is looked at. Just say what happened and what you want for your dad. If you are a minority then you have a higher mountain to climb. If you do not try then there is no chance of getting there.

hello can you tell me what subway line to take from penn station nyc to the brooklyn veterans hospital?

April 152010

The "N" does not stop in Penn Station…you have to walk a block to 6th Avenue to catch the N

Might I suggest another route:

From Penn Station, take the "A" Train downtown to West 4th Street. (one stop)

At West 4th Street, go Downstairs and transfer for the Brooklyn Bound "D" train.

Take the "D" train to the 18th Avenue Stop in Brooklyn. This is about 1/2 an hour on the train.

When you get off at 18th Avenue, you need to get on the B8 bus at the corner of 18th Ave and New Utrecht Avenue…going towards Bay Ridge. (Best to ask the token clerk when you exit the station where to find the bus…or ask someone on the street….which bus to take.)

Take the B8 Bus to Cropsey Ave and 14th Ave. You can walk from there. (Ask the Bus Driver to let you know when you reach your stop. The bus driver can also point you in the right direction towards the hospital.)

Good luck.

Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center Investigation-Part 2

April 142010

Broadcast 5/3/2005-Channel 12 TV News: Ignoring critical monitoring alarms in the ICU(Intensive Care Unit)at the Robert J. Dole VA Hospital in Wichita,KS. Our US Senator Robert’s and Congressman Todd Tiahrt’s refusal to investigate, BIZARRE!!! But maybe this is normal for Kansas: the home of BTK(the serial killer), the toilet seat lady and stepping over murdered convenience store clerks to get a pack of cigarettes. How can we let this injustice and criminal behavior towards our veterans continue??? (see Part 1) If you wish additional information/data on these criminal activities against US veterans (helpless in an ICU), please contact me: tlgray42@yahoo.com

where is a vetrans hospital in hawaii at and is it a good hospital?

April 132010

My husband is a vetran and rated at 100 percent. We loved the hospital in San Diego, they were really thourough, but here in Ok they suck big time. We are looking at hawaii for a possible future move in a year or so after our baby is born and want to look into a veterans hospital and what not.

Tripler AMC is the military hospital for Hawaii. I delivered our son there and it was wonderful. Never had any problems what so ever. My husband also saw some specialists there and they were top ones too. Tripler will also covers patients that need special care from the rest of the Pacific like Guam, Japan, Australia, etc..

Now I do know of some people who didn’t have the greatest of treatment there but that is just like any other hospital out there. We as a family found that they were as good as San Diego if in not some ways better. It really depends on what you are needing and what you expect to how you will feel about the hospital.

what do you do when you volunteer at a veterans hospital?

April 112010

There are any number of things you could do at a VA hospital. You could read to blind or old vets. You could pass out magazines or you could just keep people company.
