How long were you in the hospital after an induction?

On Monday night, I’m going to be given cervidil to ’soften’ my cervix, and on Tuesday morning I’ll be given pitocin to induce labor due to gestational diabetes.

How long can I expect to be in the hospital, generally speaking? For experienced moms / nurses / physicians, how long can I expect to be there after I’ve given birth? Can you give me any tips or things I should ask during this time?

Thanks ahead of time!

I was induced on Dec 3rd and came home Dec 4th. But it was also my second child. My doctor told me I could go home a day early since we both were doing really good. I didn’t have any pain meds. and delivered my son in 6 hours. I was put on pitocin at 0710 am and my son was born at 2:22 pm the same day. My cervix was already soft and I was 2 cm. With my first son I stayed in the hospital for 2 days.

Usually it is 2 days after a vaginal birth and 3 days after a c-section. But it can vary depending on how you and the baby are doing.

I would just ask them what they are doing when they do it and ask how everything is progressing. Good Luck and congrats on the baby.

  5. Just so the first answer doesn’t scare you too much, my induction was quicker, easier, and less painful than my other 2 labors. unless there’s some kind of complication, you should be in the standard 24-48 hours. Relax, you’ll be fine. And as far as asking questions, during the induction ask any question you want. That’s what all those nurses are there for. There is no such thing as a stupid quetion when you’re going to be giving birth. Good luck!

  6. My first and third babies were induced. First was in 1995. I had the pessary (Prostin) and contractions started within the hour, my baby was born four hours later, but I was kept in hospital for a week because she had feeding problems.

With the third one (2004) I was given prostin, and two hours later put on a drip. My waters were broken, but it took fifteen hours for labour to get started. I was out of the hospital an hour after giving birth. I was never even transferred to the ward.

That’s the way it seems to be these days – at least here in the UK. If you go to the hospital at all to have your baby, you can leave as soon as all the weighing and checks have been done and you’ve showered and dressed. After all, you’re not ill so why should you be in hospital? The midwife will call on you at home for the next ten days, and then the Health Visitor for a further month or two.

If they want to keep you in where you are, it may be just because they get money out of you. You don’t need to be there. Go home with your baby!

I delivered my first child normally, she came 2 weeks earlier than the due date. My second child was induced as he was 2 weeks late than the due date. He was born 6 hours after I was induced. I didnt feel a thing…no pain..nothing what so ever. I pushed cause the doctor was screaming at me asking me to push..but I didnt feel a thing. The baby was born fine and I was warded for 3 days. A month later, I felt this lump coming out of my v. Asked the doc, he said thats normal. I didnt feel normal cause didnt have it for my first delivery. Anyway, cause I pushed too much, I think… 3 years later, I found out I had prolapse problem. Did a bladder prolapse surgery. 2 years after that did a vagina wall prolapse surgery and now scheduled to do hysterectomy (I am just 32!). So my advise to you is, be calm, go through the inducement, rest as much as you can and dont forget to do your pelvic muscle exercise after your delivery. Check the websites for more info. Good luck!!

when i was induced it took almost two weeks for anything to happen (using gel/cervical sweep) then they burst my waters manually and started me on the hormone drip. labour took 7 hours and i was admitted for 3 days after (though that could be due to complications aswell, the placenta wouldn’t detach and i lost alot of blood (nothing to do with induction)) then was transfered to a maturnity suite for another 2 days. As for questions to ask, make sure if your going to breastfeed, that you’ve got it established before you leave, or ask to be referred to a lactition if one is available, because there is nothing worse then struggling in silence with it. And in regards to the gestational diabetes, don’t worry about it, in almost all cases it completely disappears after birth and will not have an impact on your health, though it can mean your baby will be larger then was estimated. I had it, and at my 41week scan they said my son was est 7lb6, but he came out 9lb2

  9. I was induced 2 weeks early because my son had a heart defect which needed surgery. I checked into the hosptial at 6 am on Aug. 23rd and the pitocin was started around 8am… My water broke around 4 am on the 24th and Ethan was born at 8:05 am. so i was in labor for 24 hours.
Now we didnt leave the hospital for 6 weeks due to my sons surgery BUT normally they have you stay for 48 hours after birth to monitor you and your baby!
    Good LUCK!!
