Is a clinical Psychologist able to work in a Psychiatric hospital/ward?
I am really really hoping and dreaming that I become a clinical psychologist, not a psychiatrist and I was wondering whether or not I could still work in a Psychiatric Hospital or ward as a clinical psychologist? If so what would be my role?
When I worked at a state psychiatric hospital, clinical psychologists also worked there. In fact, they had an internship for clinical psychology Ph.D students to do their hours.
The role they fulfilled at the facility I worked at (as a Social Worker) was testing and they provided psychotherapy. Some of the testing that I know of included: personality testing, competency testing for the courts and sometimes IQ testing.
As a Clinical Social Worker I was able to provide psychotherapy as well but much of my time was taken up with discharge planning.
I do not know about Crisis Hospitals/Units, I am only familiar with the longer term state facility where I worked. Although I’ve been on many Psych Units I do not remember meeting Psychologists.
I hope this helps, good luck!
