April 12010

The video you are watching is Delores a retired Psych Tech that worked at the Stockton State Mental Hospital during the time frame of 1955 and 1960. This is the same time frame that Elizabeth Rathjen allegedly walked away from the hospital and has been missing since that time. Delores sheds light on the process at the medical center and some of what she witnessed during the time she was working there.

She explains that it is very unlikely that Elizabeth walked away from the medical hospital. During her tenure at the hospital she experience and witnessed less than ethical treatment by one of the doctors who performed the Electric Shock Treatments. She also shares other events that she knows of that occurred at the hospital.

Stockton Mental Hospital – 30 Bodies found in Mass Gravesite

March 202010

Stockton Mental Hospital –in Dec. 2005 over 30 bodies were discovered buried in an unidentified mass grave site in Stockton, CA. Grupe Construction was re-developing an area on the former Mental Hospital grounds now the location California State University Satellite office. We are attempting to locate Elizabeth Rathjen who was one of the former patients who we are seeking supposedly walked away from the mental hospital in Feb. 1956. We believe one of these bodies could be her and want the State Dept. of Mental Health Department to do what is right and to pay for the DNA testing so the people in the mass grave will have a name again and the families can have closure and give their loved ones a proper and dignified burial.

Donald the man you hear in the video was a former patient at the hospital and has insight on the terrible inhumane way the patients were treated. He has been instrumental in organizing a group called California Memorial Project that help give the people who died in the mental institutes a name and a dignified and proper burial.

In 1990 over 2,238 bodies were removed from Stockton State Mental Hospital grounds and moved to the Rural Cemetery and placed in 1 burial site with a headstone that reads “Unidentified Persons”.

The Mental Hospital facility sold for approximately 9.3 million dollars for the property but they can’t afford to pay for DNA testing. Grupe Construction found the bodies while digging out a pond on the property and claim they are not responsible for the DNA testing; State Mental Health Dept. say it’s not their responsibility; the City of Stockton say it’s not their responsibility … and no one wants to claim jurisdiction. Bill Holland from the Mental Health Department told Joyce who is the daughter of Elizabeth Rathjen she could pay for DNA testing on the 30 or more bodies found if she wanted to. Otherwise the bodies will be quietly moved in May, 2007 to the Rural Cemetery and listed as “Unidentified Persons” as well.

If you have knowledge pertaining to Elizabeth Rathjen or have family or friends who entered the mental health facility and were never seen again please contact me with your story. Please help us urge the State to do what is right and perform DNA testing and give these people a name and proper burial. Contact your local Senator, Congressman, Assemblyman or Representative and make your voice be heard. Tell them you want to Plea to them to pay for DNA testing on these bodies. If you would like to donate money to help pay for this cause you can also do that as well. Thank you for taking action in this matter.

Inside Old Bryce State Mental Hospital

March 142010

A few friends and I decided to take a trip this Friday night into the old and dilapidated annex of Bryce State Mental Hospital near the Tuscaloosa Airport off of Highway 82.
There isn’t much information on the web on the history of the annex but I found a good compilation of the rumors and what is known about the place on the al.com ghost stories forum:
“Actually, what everyone calls “Old Bryce” appears to have been a mental institution built as the sister to Bryce Hospital. Bryce is located in Tuscaloosa next to the University of Alabama.
‘Old Bryce’ was the mental hospital for black patients during segregation, from what I understand. There has indeed been a fire, and the building may be structurally unsound. During wetter seasons of the year, the basement floods, and is impossible to navigate around.
It is not advisable to enter Bryce, as it is constantly under surveillance by the local police, trying to keep trespassers away. It is owned by the state of Alabama, as is the S.D. Allen nursing home that sits on the land adjacent to “Old Bryce.”
Old Bryce was actually called either The Colony or the Boy’s Colony. As for the reason that it closed down, there is speculation that experiments were performed on the patients that may have been inhumane (lobotomies, for instance). But at the time, these procedures were considered legitimate medicine.
Personally, I think the institution was shut down because of desegregation, but I don’t know why Bryce would not use it as additional facilities if that were the case… the buildings were built nearly identically to each other, and they are both owned by the state.”
Since there isn’t a lot of information or video of the inside of this place I decided to post a video of our adventure inside.
Enjoy.

My trip to the mental ward

February 192010

My now infamous video as seen on Inside Edition: http://www.insideedition.com/news.aspx?storyID=1245

Loooooong story, but the point is I got to spend five fun-filled days in a psychiatric hospital (a jail where they send crazy people) and I lived to tell about it! It was probably the most up experience of my life, and yet for some reason I miss that place. Mostly I miss all the good drugs they gave me. Anyway, despite having all my taken away from me I still managed to smuggle my digital camera in so HA! Now I have video proof of the living conditions I had to endure.

And just so that I never have to answer these questions again:

Q: How did you get your camera in there? A: I had a guest bring me my digital camera one day during a visitation. I was allowed private visitations and took full advantage of that. The hospital did not allow guests into the actual ward–they were only allowed into a special visitation room–so I needed to find another way of showing them what my living conditions were like inside. I took the cam in my pocket from the visitation area back to my room, shot the video and then returned it to my guest for them to see and take back home with them. I never had any idea so many people would be interested in this video, it’s surprising.

Q: Were you locked in that room? A: No. I know I called it my “jail cell” in the video, but that’s only because it looked and felt like a jail cell. I was allowed to leave the room (during the day anyway) but was locked inside the ward. Twice a day we were allowed to go outside for 15 minutes into that little fenced-off area I pointed to in the video. Believe it or not, this was one of the nicest rooms in the ward. There was only one other private room on my floor besides mine–all the other rooms were “dorm” style with three or more patients sharing the same space. I would have gone APE if they’d have put me in one of those rooms. So yea, I was actually very lucky to have this room…as crazy as that sounds.
